In 1865 outside Clinton Arms on Shakespeare street in Nottingham a group of men gathered to play shinney a game kind of  like hockey, a man called J S Scrimshaw suggested that they should play football instead thus creating Nottingham Forest Football Club. Nottingham Forest played their first ever football match in 1866 against Notts County who were formed 4 years previous.

Nottingham Forest got their first taste of cup glory in 1898 when they beat Derby County 3-1.
Above is the winning team that won the FA cup in 1898. Forest spent most of the early 1900's in the second division but ten in 1919 the first division wanted to expand their league to 22 teams. Forest applied for entry along with many other teams they received three votes and got promoted as well as Arsenal and Chelsea. In 1949 they were relegated to the third division but quickly came back while scoring a record 110 goals.
